How It Works

1@2x

Step 1: Medical Clearance

Prioritizing your safety is paramount as you embark on your transformative healing journey. Our initial focus will be conducting a thorough medical screening to carefully assess any potential medical or psychiatric contraindications that may pose a risk to your well-being. This crucial step ensures that proceeding with ketamine assisted psychotherapy is both safe and appropriate for you.

Step 2: Psychiatric Intake

In the intake session, you will have the opportunity to meet with Dr. Williams and openly share your personal story. This collaborative discussion will not only allow you to explore grounding tools but also provide an avenue to express your intentions for the healing process. The primary objective is to thoroughly prepare you for your upcoming ketamine medicine session, address any inquiries you may have, and ensure that consent is fully understood and reviewed.

Step 3: Medicine Sessions

In this 2.0-2.5 hour session, you will have the opportunity to experience the effects of ketamine within a secure, serene, and comforting environment. The initial dosage is intentionally kept low to observe how your body responds to ketamine. You will be encouraged to turn inward, finding comfort as you relax, listen to soothing music, and wear an eye mask. Throughout the experience, Dr. Williams will be present to ensure your safety, provide a supportive environment, and empower you on your journey.

Step 4 : Integration Sessions

Following each medicine session, a timely integration session with Dr. Williams will be scheduled. During this session, you will have the opportunity to process and discuss your ketamine medicine experience. It provides a space to explore any insights, emotions, or themes that emerged during the session and begin the process of integrating this transformative journey into your daily life. These integration sessions typically last between 50 to 75 minutes, allowing ample time for reflection and guidance.

Ketamine Used in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy

At Source Psychiatry, psychedelic-assisted therapy is provided through ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. The practice does not currently offer general therapeutic access to psilocybin or MDMA.

Ketamine is FDA-approved as an anesthetic but is not FDA-approved for the treatment of psychiatric disorders. Its psychiatric use is considered off-label and requires an individualized medical assessment. Ketamine is also different from esketamine, sold under the brand name Spravato.

Safety and Clinical Eligibility

Patient safety begins with a detailed evaluation. Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy is not appropriate for everyone. Dr. Williams reviews medical conditions, psychiatric history, current medications, substance-use history, pregnancy considerations, and other factors that may affect treatment safety. Receiving an evaluation does not guarantee approval for treatment.

Two Approaches to Ketamine Care

Ketamine care can look very different depending on the provider. At Source Psychiatry in Austin, ketamine is offered as ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, with medical screening, psychiatric preparation, supported medicine sessions, and follow-up integration built into the process.

Part of CareSource Psychiatry’s Ketamine-Assisted PsychotherapyA Medication-Focused Ketamine Visit
Before treatment beginsDr. Lauren Williams reviews medical conditions, psychiatric history, medications, substance-use history, pregnancy considerations, and other safety factors.Screening may focus mainly on whether the patient meets the medical requirements to receive ketamine.
Preparing for the experienceThe psychiatric intake includes the patient’s personal story, treatment intentions, grounding tools, questions, and informed consent.Preparation may concentrate more on dosing instructions, possible side effects, and what will happen during the appointment.
Role of the psychiatristDr. Williams is involved in the preparation, medicine session, and integration process.Psychiatric involvement may be limited to prescribing, medical clearance, or medication monitoring.
During the medicine sessionThe 2 to 2.5-hour session takes place in a calm clinical setting, with Dr. Williams present to support safety and the therapeutic experience. The visit may be centered on receiving ketamine while clinical staff monitor physical responses.
Starting doseThe initial dose is intentionally kept low so the patient’s response can be observed before treatment progresses.Dosing may follow a standard protocol based on the clinic’s method and the patient’s medical profile.
Processing the experienceA 50 to 75-minute integration session follows each medicine session to discuss emotions, insights, and themes that emerged.Follow-up may focus primarily on symptom changes, medication response, and side effects.
Connection to ongoing careKetamine-assisted psychotherapy may be included as one part of a broader psychiatric treatment plan when clinically appropriate.Ketamine may be offered as a separate treatment series without ongoing psychiatric care from the same provider.

Source Psychiatry provides ketamine-assisted psychotherapy rather than general therapeutic access to psilocybin or MDMA. Ketamine is used off-label for psychiatric treatment, and every patient must complete an individualized evaluation before treatment can be considered.

Psychedelic Assisted Therapy : Frequently Asked Questions

What is psychedelic-assisted therapy?

Psychedelic-assisted therapy combines professional psychotherapy with carefully supervised psychedelic treatment in a safe clinical setting. It is designed to help individuals address conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and emotional challenges. Treatment typically includes preparation, guided sessions, and follow-up therapy to help patients process their experiences and support lasting mental health improvements.

Is psychedelic-assisted therapy legal in Texas?

Psychedelic-assisted therapy is legal in Texas only in limited circumstances. Ketamine-assisted therapy is legally available when provided by qualified medical professionals. However, substances such as psilocybin and MDMA are not currently approved for general therapeutic use in Texas and are generally only accessible through approved clinical research studies. Laws and regulations continue to evolve as research advances.

What is the most therapeutic psychedelic?

There is no single psychedelic that is considered the “most therapeutic” for everyone. However, psilocybin-assisted therapy has been among the most widely studied approaches for conditions such as depression, anxiety, and emotional distress, with research showing promising therapeutic benefits in carefully supervised clinical settings. The most effective treatment depends on an individual’s symptoms, medical history, and treatment goals.

What is the success rate of psychedelic-assisted therapy?

The success rate of psychedelic-assisted therapy varies depending on the condition being treated, the type of therapy used, and the individual patient. Clinical studies have shown promising results, with many participants experiencing significant improvements in symptoms of depression, anxiety, and PTSD when treatment is provided in a structured therapeutic setting. Some studies have reported that a substantial number of patients achieve meaningful symptom relief that can last for months or even years after treatment.

Are psychedelics good for anxiety?

Psychedelics may reduce anxiety for some people, but they are not an established first-line anxiety treatment. Research on psilocybin-assisted therapy is most promising for anxiety and emotional distress related to cancer or other serious illnesses. Evidence for generalized anxiety and other anxiety disorders remains limited.

Treatment should occur only in a supervised clinical setting because psychedelics can also trigger fear, panic, confusion, increased heart rate, and elevated blood pressure. No classic psychedelic is currently FDA-approved specifically for anxiety.
